Choosing a wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you'll make, second only to picking the venue (and, of course, your future spouse!). The flowers will wilt, the cake will be eaten, but your photographs? They'll last a lifetime.

When it comes to finding your perfect photographer, it can get overwhelming fast, so I've put together this guide with essential questions to help you find your perfect photographer.

Hey, I'm Emma!

I'm a wedding photographer in Leicester and I absolutely love helping couples at every stage of their journey, whether you're newly engaged or just a day away from saying "I do".

With 10 years of experience and over 100 weddings under my belt, I know exactly what questions will help you find your perfect photographer match.

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY STYLE QUESTIONS

1, "What's Your Photography Style and How Do You Edit?"

You'll see photographers describe themselves as "light & airy", "dark & moody", or "true to colour" when it comes to editing. But style goes beyond the final look, it is also about how they document the day, do they pose or capture what is happening?

Editing style is what also attracts you to their work, do you like the colours, the de/saturated, contrast etc. The question isn't so much "what's your style" but also "how would you edit my wedding?", do they use ai software or edit themselves?

2, "How Do You Guide Couples During Portrait Sessions?"

Will they give gentle guidance, fully pose you, or use a mix? Some photographers position every finger (editorial style) while others, like myself, offer gentle guidance and let your natural chemistry shine through. Both approaches are gorgeous, but knowing which fits your comfort level is key!

3, "Can I See Full Wedding Galleries?" (Red Flags to Watch For)

By viewing a full wedding gallery you are watching the story of the day unfold, not just their greatest hits on instagram. Are you in love with them all? Does the editing stay consistent throughout? Have they captured all the moments you would want to see in your own gallery?

A complete gallery will show you everything you need to see. If they hesitate to show you full galleries, that could be a red flag. We're proud of our work and we want to show it to everyone and we also know how important it is to couples to see a full day in all its glory!

PRICING AND REVIEWS

4, What Wedding Photography Packages Do You Offer and What's Included?

Hopefully you've seen prices on their website, but it's always worth getting the full picture.

Here's what to clarify:

The basics: How many hours of coverage? How will you get your images? How many photos are included? Any bonus items like prints or albums?

The extras: Can you extend coverage? What about engagement shoots, second photographers, or professional products?

Don't be afraid to ask about customization - most photographers love creating packages that fit your specific needs and budget.

5, "Can We See Reviews from Recent Wedding Clients?"

A fairly important one, reviews are testaments from previous clients so these should be showcased all over their website, if not, is there a reason why? They may have just started out and haven't accumulated them yet but seeing some is rather important.

6, "How Long Does It Take to Receive Our Wedding Gallery?"

Most photographers will deliver a sneak peek gallery within a few days of the wedding, this will be the highlights, the banging shots from the day and the ones you can share to the world and shout "we're married!", this is usually a few images from each section of the day, but also ask how many you will receive then and then the full gallery is usually within 6-8 weeks.

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY CONTRACTS AND INSURANCE

7, "Do You Have Public Liability Insurance for Wedding Photography?"

Weddings are busy, joyful, and sometimes a little unpredictable, which is exactly why public liability insurance matters. With lots of people and equipment around, accidents can happen. If a guest tripped over a bag or a light stand, or if something in the venue was damaged, insurance makes sure it's handled properly and without stress.

It's also something any professional photographer should have. Many venues won't even let suppliers work without it, and for good reason. It shows you're prepared, responsible, and serious about your work. For couples, it's that extra peace of mind knowing their photographer has everything covered.

8, "What Happens If You're Unwell or Cannot Photograph Our Wedding?"

While nobody wants to think about worst-case scenarios, having a backup plan gives you peace of mind. Professional photographers should have a network of trusted associates and a clear plan for emergencies. This usually means they'll hire someone to cover the day but edit the images themselves to maintain consistency.

Don't forget, we're all human and sometimes life happens! But having these backup plans in place means your day is always covered.

9, "Can We Print Our Wedding Images Ourselves?"

This is about printing rights, which you should absolutely have. Copyright will always stay with the photographer, but your contract should clearly state you can print the images for personal use after the wedding. Printing them on a billboard however, you'll need exclusive permission from the photographer and if you send any to any other suppliers. The credit should always be given on any images, it's always heartbreaking when an image is shared and no tag for the person who created it.

While it costs more, getting your beloved images printed professionally is definitely worth the extra money. The quality difference is huge, and these are memories you'll treasure forever!

10, "What Are Your Terms and Conditions for Wedding Photography?"

I know, I know... reading terms and conditions isn't exactly exciting! But you wouldn't buy a car without checking the agreement first, right? The fine print matters, especially for something as important as your wedding.

Key things to look for:
  • Payment: Deposit amount, when it's due, and final payment deadline
  • Cancellation: What happens if you cancel vs. if they have to cancel
  • Travel costs: Any additional fees for accommodation or travel
  • Image usage: What you can use photos for (spoiler: personal use is fine, promoting yours or other businesses might not be)
  • The unexpected stuff: Weather disasters, equipment failures, government restrictions
  • Day-of details: Do they need a meal? What if timeline changes?

It might seem like a lot, but a good photographer will walk you through everything so there are no surprises.

Questions You DON'T Need to Worry About:

I get asked about these things sometimes, but honestly? They're not make-or-break factors.

Save your energy for the questions that actually matter!

"Have you photographed at my venue before?"

Good photographers adapt to any location and scout beforehand if needed.

"What will you wear on the day?"

We dress appropriately and blend into your celebration - it's what we do!

"Can you take a photo of ...?"

Of course! We're happy to capture any moments or combinations you want, it's your wedding day!
